Empowerment and Growth: Reflections From a Gen Z on the Job
Gen Z enter the workforce with high expectations — and a healthy dose of skepticism. Many of us assume we’ll spend a few years in our first role gaining experience before moving on in search of greater empowerment, responsibility and purpose elsewhere.
As the first generation to grow up fully online, we’ve also inherited an “always-on” culture that blurs boundaries and accelerates burnout. Recent studies report that anywhere from 40 to 83 percent of Gen Z workers feel burned out, stressed or anxious all or most of the time. And according to Gallup’s January 28 update on U.S. engagement, only 37 percent of Gen Z and younger millennial workers strongly agree that they have opportunities to learn and grow at work, down from 48 percent in 2020. They also reported the biggest drop in feeling cared about as people.
That’s why my experience stands out. As a Gen Z professional, I know how rare it is to find a workplace that doesn’t just talk about empowerment but actively practices it. At Atmus, I’ve found a culture that supports growth, encourages ownership and values connections — one that’s made me want to stay and build my career here. Here’s why I feel like I belong and can make an impact.
1. A Friendly and Inspiring Culture
As I prepared to graduate, I knew I wanted to build a career in finance, but I also knew traditional investment banking wasn’t the right path for me. Company culture and diversity were just as important to me as the role itself.
Atmus immediately stood out, not only because of its global presence, but because every person I spoke with described a culture that was both welcoming and collaborative. I was also struck by how many employees had built long tenures at the company — an encouraging sign, even before my first day.
That first impression was reinforced during my initial conversation with Ryan Copa, Senior Director of Finance. Rather than focusing narrowly on a predefined role, he asked about my interests and the areas I hoped to explore. He was open to expanding the traditional scope of a Financial Planning and Analysis role, allowing me to gain exposure to cash flow modeling, and merger and acquisition due diligence alongside core responsibilities such as functional support, budgeting and forecasting. That flexibility — and genuine interest in my development — was a key reason I was excited to join Atmus and continues to be one of the aspects I value most today.
2. Gen Z Voices Matter Here
In my first year, I saw how Atmus’ culture truly reflects its purpose of creating a better future by protecting what is important. Safety for example, is not only a key priority, but is embedded in everything we do. From early on, I felt supported and encouraged to share my perspective, even in situations where I didn’t expect my voice to carry weight. I was given opportunities to contribute meaningfully and explore areas that genuinely interested me.
Even small interests were noticed. When I expressed curiosity, I was invited to support the finance recruiting team. Experiences like this made me feel trusted, valued and empowered to grow beyond my core role.
3. Belief in My Potential
Atmus has played an important role in my development, supporting my transition from student to professional through consistent coaching and hands-on learning. I’ve been encouraged not just to apply what I learned in school, but to question assumptions and deepen my understanding through real-world experience.
Although I was introduced to financial modeling in college, it was at Atmus when I began to see how differently those concepts can apply across organizations. Working on real business challenges helped me better understand the nuances behind the models, build confidence in my judgment, and grow more comfortable navigating complexity.
That same commitment to growth extends beyond day-to-day work. When I shared my interest in pursuing a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation, my manager and the company were immediately supportive, offering assistance with exam fees, study materials and related resources. Atmus understands the importance of the continued growth and development of its people and invests in the right learning opportunities for employees at every level of the company. This has reinforced that Atmus is a place where employees can thrive.
4. Relationships, Relationships, Relationships
One of the most meaningful parts of my experience at Atmus has been the relationships I’ve built across the organization. From early on, I’ve had opportunities to collaborate with team members at all levels, which has helped me learn quickly and see the business from a broader perspective. I never thought that after just one year out of college I would get to work with the CFO of the company, meet the CEO and be valued for my professional expertise.

My relationship with my manager has been especially impactful. Through consistent guidance, flexibility and encouragement, I’ve grown in my role and gradually taken on greater responsibility. Just as important, the connections I’ve built with colleagues around the world have made Atmus feel like a truly global and supportive community — one that I know will continue to shape my career well beyond my time in this role.
Overcoming Gen Z Challenges
I’m grateful to have found a workplace that empowers its people, providing opportunities to grow, contribute and reach their full potential. Atmus has welcomed me into an inclusive, purpose-driven culture that values flexibility, supports professional development — and most importantly — treats people with respect. The experiences of my first year have reinforced my decision to build a long-term career here.
For early-career professionals seeking more than just a first job — a place to learn, make an impact and grow with purpose — Atmus is a company that invests in its people from day one. If you’re ready to be supported, challenged and inspired, this is a place to start your career.
